Kona Walking Beam 4-Bar Linkage
All Kona dual suspension bikes use a mult-pivot 4-bar walking beam suspension. This allows us more options to individually tune the suspension geometry for Cross-Country, Back-Country, Out of Bounds or Downhill -

BACK COUNTRY DUAL SUSPENSION - Bear, Bear Dee-Lux
  Kona Back Country bikes are suited for long distance endurance rides. Frame designed for high performance and durability, using Kona Clump Light 7005 Butted Aluminum tubing. Not designed for double clamp suspension forks.

* Active, rising rate design built around Fox shocks (6.5" eye to eye: 1.5" stroke)
* With a leverage ratio of 2.7:1, the rear wheel has 4" of travel
* Main chain stay pivot is located above the horizontal hub axle plane close to the bottom bracket, minimizing "pogo" effects caused by changes in the effective chain stay length. This pivot position helps eliminate pedaling forces from activating the suspension
* Chain stays with forged dropouts joined to asymmetric chain stay yokes, replaceable rear hanger, I.S. disc mounts
* Rectangular seat stays connect to a cold-forged yolk and cold forged swing arms
* Custom drawn Kona Clump Light tubing is rectangular at the head tube, adds strength and torsional rigidity
* Cartridge bearing pivots on seat tube/swing arm pivot, seat stay yoke and bottom bracket yoke
* Custom tuned Fox Float R (Bear) and Fox Float RL (Bear Dee-Lux)

CROSS-COUNTRY DUAL SUSPENSION - Kahuna, Manomano, Mokomoko, King Kikapu
Kona Cross-Country dual suspension bikes are suited for lightweight, cross-country trail performance. Kikapu and Moko frame without shock weigh less than 4.5 pounds. 2002 design has reduced weight without compromising strength or rigidity. Lightweight components are used throughout. The latest in Fox suspension shocks, FLOAT, with Air Negative function are featured for high efficiency. Not recommended for downhill racing, dual slalom, tricks or stunts. Not designed for double clamp suspension forks.

* Leverage ratio of 2.25:1, produces 3.4" of rear wheel travel
* Main chain stay pivot is located above horizontal hub axle plane close to bottom bracket, minimizing "pogo" effects caused by changes in effective chain stay length. This helps eliminate pedaling forces from activating suspension
* Asymmetric chain stays with cold forged dropouts have replaceable derailleur hangers and I.S. disc mounts
* Lightweight uni seat stays connect to cold forged swing arms

OUT OF BOUNDS ("FREERIDE") DUAL SUSPENSION - Stinky, Stinky Dee-Lux, Stinky Primo
Kona Out of Bounds dual suspension bikes are suited for extreme riding where steep sections predominate. Frame is designed for high strength and durability, using heavy-duty Kona Clump 7005 Aluminum tubing. Heavy-duty components and shocks are featured for maximum strength. Bikes are heavier than cross-country dual suspension, and are fitted with triple chain rings to allow for steep uphill riding. Double clamp forks are compatible.

* Active, rising rate design built around Fox shocks 7.9" eye to eye: 2.0" stroke
* A leverage ratio of 2.5:1, produces 5" of travel (Stinky), 3:1, produces 6" of travel
* Main chain stay pivot located above horizontal hub axle plane close to bottom bracket, minimizing "pogo" effects caused by changes in effective chain stay length. This keeps pedaling forces from activating suspension

GRAVITY (DOWNHILL) BIKES DUAL SUSPENSION - Stinky Nine, Stab Primo
Kona Gravity dual suspension bikes are suited for extreme riding. Frames are designed for high strength and durability, using heavy-duty Kona Clump 7005 Aluminum tubing. Heavy-duty components and shocks are featured for maximum strength. Double clamp forks are compatible.

* Rising rate design built around Fox shocks (8.75" eye to eye: 2.75" stroke)
* With a leverage ratio of 3.25:1, the rear wheel has 8 - 9" of travel
* Adjustable rear dropouts allow 1" of wheelbase adjustment
* 2002 Stinky Nine has a lot of seat height adjustment and is front derailleur compatible
* 2002 Stab Primo frame is lighter and stiffer, with Kona Clump Custom Butted DH specific 7005 Aluminum tubing
* Pivot locations minimize pedal input "squatting" and "lockout"
* Highly efficient design is active under all types of pedaling, gravity and braking forces
