Welcome to the Kona Mash-Up, Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre, 30 August 2008
Headlining the UK 2008 events calendar is the brand new Kona Mash-Up. Stirring a two wheeled culture clash we’ve laid down the ultimate challenge to unite riders across the board. From XC whippets to the most technically gifted downhill riders and every breed of trail warrior in-between this race breaks down traditional riding boundaries, encouraging a step out of regular comfort zones to go against the clock on seminal sections of Glyncorrwg’s trails.
Confused? Let us explain the concept
Installing chip activated timing mats on seven sections of both Glyncorrwg’s Whites Level and July Trail (part of the infamous Skyline) Kona’s Mash-Up has selected only the choicest cuts from each trail, so you can expect techy singletrack and swoopy ribbons of knife edge bombing when it’s time to drop the hammer. There’s even a Whites Level climb included as a timed section if you’d rather pay in sweat than gamble with gravity. Whilst the shortest accumulated time through these sections will decide the overall victors (in the two categories we offer), cross-discipline grudge matches are sure to rear when it’s all against all in the race for the fastest individual sections. For example an XC rider who entered the Enduro category might be hot on the wheels of the local downhill specialist on some of the single-track sections (or vice versa?!)The beauty of these bite sized chunks of rockery is that outside of the timing devices the trails are neutralised so if it’s simply honour amongst friends or a personal best you’re after, you could concentrate on a single leg to your hearts content.
A little more detail – the categories: Enduro
You will ride the Whites Level loop (excluding the black run) plus the July trail (total riding distance of approx. 40km). You will be timed on parts of the climb, the single-track and downhill sections. Technical
You will ride the Whites Level loop (including the black run), but your time will only be taken on particular single track and the downhill sections. You will still ride (or push!) up the climb, but that time will not be included in your result, so you can take your time!
The venue Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre is by many regarded as the best trail centre in the UK. Just a short drive up from Port Talbot (M4, Junction 40) the trail rich Afan Forest Park (of which Glyncorrwg is at the northern tip) offers trails of any technical level and of a variety of distances. 4 trails with sheer endless variations start only a stone stone away from each other and can easily combined for a ‘full on’ biking weekend. The Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre is the starting point of the White’s Level and the Skyline Trail and with showers, toilets, parking and camping not to mention one of the best Mountain Bike Café’s the UK has to offer all in one spot it offers the ideal location for the 1st ever Kona Mash-Up.
The organisers

In 2006 a new event concept was added to the portfolio with the first ever TransWales stage challenge which was followed up in 2007 with the TransScotland and will return to Wales later in the summer. Besides that the two main people behind Mountain Bike Events John and Michael are individually involved in a variety of other events like Welsh MTB rounds, charity rides to Paris and the Bristol and Cheddar Bikefest.
