Dear Kona Mash-Up rider,
Only a couple of days to go before the 1st ever Kona Mash-Up kicks off at the Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre in Afon Forest near part Talbot.

Before we head over there to prepare the course we’d thought we better point out some of the important points of the weekend.

Location:
The majority of you probably know where the Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre is but in case you don’t please make sure that you check the directions to our partner shop Skyline Cycles who are based at the Centre: http://www.skylinecycles.co.uk/id3.html.

Registration time:
The registration will open at 5pm on Friday (29th August) afternoon and will stay open till around 8pm. It will reopen on Saturday (30th August) morning at 8am and will stay open till 12pm (noon). Please make sure that you come to the registration straight away when you arrive as you can only get onto the camp grounds with a valid camping ticket.

Start time:
The event has an open start from 9am on Saturday morning onwards. There is no preset start time for riders and riders can start as late as 12pm (noon). You can’t start after 12pm (noon).

Camping and parking:
There is limited amount of camping which makes pre-booking a must. Please note that we can’t guarantee camping space for you if you haven’t pre-booked this when you entered the event. You need to go to the registration and pick up your camping ticket first before you can go onto the camping pitches. Regarding the parking please make sure that you follow the instructions of the parking staff at all times. Unfortunately we can’t guarantee that you can park your vehicle next to your tent.

Timed sections:
There are several timed sections out on course that will register your timing chip (on your bike) as you ride them. At the beginning of these timed sections you will find a timing marshal who will give you an idea of who is ahead of you and how far ahead so that you can plan your start as best as possible. Please note that there is the chance that you will come across slower riders in front of you on any of the timed sections. Please treat them with respect and give them ample warning if you should try to overtake. If you should be one of those slower riders please try your best to let the faster rider go past as soon as possible without taking any unnecessary risks.

Marshals:
As stated above there are timing marshals at the beginning of every timed section plus some roaming marshals. If you should have any problems or witness a rider having difficulties please let the marshals know so that they can organise help.

Timing chips:
You will be given a timing chip when you register. Please make sure that it is correctly fitted as we can only give you a time if you have the chip on your bike. Please make sure that you hand the timing ship back to us when you finish your riding (finish arch next to the Mountain bike Centre) where you will be given your finishing present. No chip – no present!

Feeding / service station:
We will have a feeding station with drinks etc up on the top of the climb. Please keep in mind that the feeding stations are for replenishing your supplies but they are not to be relied upon as the only source of your provisions.

Timing / results / presentation:
We are doing our best to put live timing into place. Unfortunately the success of that depends on if we can get a radio signal going or not. Failing live timing we will try to have at least one ‘lunch time’ timing update and possibly more if we can. We are aiming at running the presentation around 7pm at the DropOff café. Please listen out to timing changes. We are aiming at getting all times up for the presentation. Failing that we will have the timing results on our website at the beginning of next week.

Finisher party:
We will have a finishing party at the DropOff café in the Mountain Bike Centre with live music and a DJ. Due to the amount of people we are expecting please note that the kitchen will close earlier than normal. The guys from the DropOff café will still have food available after but it will not be ‘a la cart’.

Test bikes:
There will a wide choice of test bikes available headed by the infamous Kona Magic range. If you are interested in testing any of the bikes please make sure that you bring photo id and/or credit card.

Security:
Please make sure that you look after your bike and gear over the weekend and that you leave no valuables in your car. We can only recommend locking your bike securely when you are not riding it and over night. We can’t take responsibility for lost or broken property.

Briefing:
We have added the briefing as a PDF download to this page. Please make sure that you download and read it before you come to the events.

DoddyKona Mash-Up 2008

MBUK announce four special awards
categories for Kona Mash-Up

As media sponsor of the Kona Mash-Up, to be held at Glyncorrwg Ponds in Afan Forest Wales on 30 August, Mountain Biking UK magazine will be presenting four special awards at the event. These are in addition to the main timed sections and have been set up to celebrate those riders who give it their all and really enter into the spirit of the Mash-Up.

The guys from the magazine will be patrolling the trails in search of candidates they think are worthy of the following awards:

The Mini Masher

This one’s for all those younger riders who demonstrate their raw enthusiasm and ride totally off the hook! If you’re there, you’re young and you’re mashing it up, you just might win…

The Master Masher

There should be a fair few of the more ‘mature’ riders raring to show the young guys how to do it. If you use your wisely age to kick ass, then this prize may be for you.

The Thrash Hound award

There’s always someone that pins it – up, down, along, whatever. So we’re putting up an award for the guy or girl who flies along like no one else. We ‘re looking for aggro style – letting it all hang out – but with speed. You know if this one applies to you.

MBUK’s Grand Mashter

Enduro events are largely about comradeship. Everyone’s there for a laugh and a good ride. So we’ll be making a special award for the person that we think really carries the spirit of the Mash-Up.

You’ll also get chance to try and beat some of the guys from the mag as they take on the mighty Whites Level and July Trail. Staff Writer Doddy and Tech Writer Ian Collins are well up for ripping round the sections as fast as possible and they’ll be available to chat all day too, as well as the rest of the team.

MBUK’s Highway to Hell!

As part of their involvement in the Mash-Up, MBUK have also named a section for all those technical riders out there. Called the MBUK Highway to Hell this featured section takes on some of the toughest terrain on the White’s Level trail. Riders will have to be fully focused to lay down a fast time on this one. Are you up for the challenge?

It’s all shaping up to be an unmissable event. For full details check out www.konaworld.uk.com/mash-up/ and MBUK Issue 228 on sale 30 July 2008.
